Riding The Wave
If you have the genealogy "bug" you no doubt spend countless hours
surfing the net. If you haven't started-get started now. If it has been
awhile since you went looking - get started now! There is a vast, endless, and sometimes overwhelming bounty of FREE
genealogy information at your finger tips. Web pages come online every
day, information that was not found the last time you looked, could be
there now!
There are many search engines to choose from to lead you through the
world wide web. Although you may have a favorite search engine, you
should occassionaly try your search on other search engines. I have
found resources that I had not seen before by using a different search
engine. Google.com happens to be my
search engine of choice. I
especially like the "cached " feature. That feature will be of great
value if the original pages have dropped offline. Also the "translate
this page" feature can quickly translate a foreign language website
into english!
Do you have a family letter or document in a foreign language? There
is a website (Babel Fish) especially for translating, either
input the
text or enter the url of a website (http://world.altavista.com/).
Cyndi's List will tell you all you need to know about searching the
Net, http://www.cyndislist.com/search.htm
Just this week I decided to search the net looking for two surnames on
my family tree, the marriage of my grandparents in Kibworth, England in 1755. I have only the direct line from them down to my
grandfather, but nothing on siblings, etc. It has been years since I
looked for anything on these particular surnames. My search quickly
lead to a site in the United Kingdom where a researcher had posted that
she was searching for the same two surnames united in marriage in the
same location in the same time frame. I sent an email off immediately
and in response I received 15 pages of the descendents of this marraige.
These pages contain the name, birth, marriage, and death locations
nothing more. However, she asked me if I would like the *whole*
report, which includes details of data sources, stories and anecdotes of
family members, and extracts from various publications! I eagerly
await the details of the life and times of my family in "merry old
England".
This is the family of my grandfather who left England in the late 1890s,
went to Canada where he met and married an Irish immigrant, and
together they settled in San Francisco around 1909 to raise their family.
If you are researching San Francisco- this is a must see!
