$pending Your Genealogy Dollar$

As with any hobby, there will be expenses. With the advent of the internet the cost of traveling is no longer one of the main expenses. However, subscription based databases can be quite costly.

You will find many ads on genealogy sites pointing you to the subscription based research company Ancestry. COM. Current subscription rates for Ancestry. COM range from $29.95 a month- to $299.40 a
year. The good news-----------if you have a Mariposa library card you may freely access the Ancestry. COM library edition from the main library or any of the county branch libraries. This resources is accessible only inside the library. This is a database of records from the US Census; military records; court, land and probate records; vital and church records; directories; petitions for naturalization; passenger lists and more.
Many other community libraries throughout the United States also provide this service. Check with the library in your community to see if they offer this service.

Local LDS Family History Centers are another excellent free resource. The only expense you may incur is having the films you are interested in researching, mailed to the local Family History Center from the
main library in Salt Lake- affectionately called "THE Library".

Any local LDS Family History Center will order a film and have it delivered to the center for your use.
The cost of having a film sent and made available for 60 days is $5.50. You can also renew the film for another 60 days for an additional $5.50, and after that you can renew for a third time and the film will remain permanently at the center.
The Mariposa LDS Family History Center is located at 5546 Hwy. 49
N, Mariposa- Phone 209-742-5010.

Using the LDS website, http://www.familysearch.org/ - Explore this website and you will be able to search their large family information files. You can also search their family history library catalog for films/books/fiche and locate a LDS Family History Center near you.

Local Family History Centers also retain a permanent collection of films/books/fiche. You can browse the permanent holdings of the Santa Clara County LDS Family History Center inventory online to get an idea of the resources that are available for other states and foreign countries.
