WHERE THE HECK IS SAUERKRAUT?
Old documents, newspaper articles, letters, etc,. will often mention
place names that are no longer on the map. The fun begins!
I have a listing, I know it is not complete, of some Mariposa place
names and names of old mines that I have come across while researching.
http://www.mariposaresearch.net/mines.htm
I have also linked to the site all three pages of the Calsign pages
pertaining to Mariposa County Place Names.
Back in 1928 the Mariposa Gazette had a contest for folks to list many
of the old Mariposa place names. One of those place names was "Sauerkraut"!!
Does anyone know where this was?
I have several books that I use for helping folks locate California
geographic locations; _California Place Names_, Gudde, 1949; _Historic
Spots in California_
Valley and Sierra Counties, 1933; _Historic Spots in California_
Counties of the Coast Range, Hoover, 1937; and _Place Names of the
Sierra Nevada_, Browning, 1986. If you would like a lookup in one of
these books, please be in touch- you can email me at------
sweetwater@sti.net
There are also several online sites to browse for geographic
information. One is the USGS site. Here you cam search by many types
of geographic features, including streams, creeks, populated places,
churches, mountains, post offices, tunnels,etc.

If you search using only the state, and county you will get the
complete listing for all sites in the database for that county.
California Postmarks and Post Offices in conjunction with California
Town Postmarks 1849 - 1935 is another resource for locating towns,
especially those that may have "moved" during the years. This would
happen when county boundaries were changed, or when a store (often Post
Offices were set up in general stores) were closed .
Here is a short article I wrote on the subject for the NORCAL Genealogy
Resource Group-
