THE HERMIT OF HORSESHOE BEND (Continued) I had the pleasure of visiting the Mariposa Library this week. It is a wonderful haven on these hot days, and the staff is wonderful! The library has a collection of the old Mariposa newspapers on film. I was searching for the obituary of Pedro Arata, (see last weeks article). Pedro died in January of 1973 in Mariposa. I found the obituary did not contain any additional information than what was in the previously posted newspaper articles. In fact, the obituary left out the trip to San Francisco and his cataract surgery. It did tell me where Pedro is buried- The Mariposa Cemetery- so now , I will go to the cemetery, and hopefully find a headstone. I will create a webpage and chronicle the news articles I have gathered on Pedro, and a photo of his headstone so that others will know more about this man, rather than just the birth and death dates of this fellow. The webpage will help fill in the "-" (the dash) of this man's life. BORN 1882 - DIED 1973 Mariposa Gazette, Feb 1, 1973 PEDRO ARATA Funeral services were held Monday in the Mariposa Funeral Home for Pedro Arata, 90, better known as the "Hermit of Bagby" who died Jan. 25 in Fremont Hospital. (note that the California Death Index listed his death as Jan 27). Born October 26, 1882 in Italy, he reached national prominence when rising waters of Lake McClure forced him to retreat from his hand-hewn ranch and give up the garden and orchard he had planted. After the lake filled up the only access to his new "home" a weathered shack further up the mountainside, was by boat and Game Warden Harry Harris delivered his supplies to him. Two years ago he was found wandering in the hills behind his home suffering from exposure and lack of water. The aging man's eye-sight had gotten so bad that he left his home one morning and was unable to find his way back. He was brought to the Fremont Hospital and then transferred to a rest home. Rev. Jack La Dieu officiated that the services and burial followed at the Mariposa Cemetery. Happy Hunting- To read more about
