GENEALOGY by Carolyn Feroben

CALIFORNIA HISTORICAL AND GENEALOGICAL SOCIEITES ONLINE

This is the season when research  folks like to hit the road to visit document repositories, history museums, visit the old homesteads, cemeteries, attend family reunions, etc.

You can get a "jump start" in planning your trip by finding resources on the net for the local communities you plan  to visit.  I have created a current,  county by county,  resource page of links to California Genealogy and Historical Societies- including county archive sites.

Also included are links to the  state level societies in California.  You really should check out the California State Archives.  I have had a wonderful response from them for my research requests.

I am a member of the California Genealogical Society and enjoy benefits of online resources " for members only" for just   $35.00 a year.

Some of the websites I have found  are brief and only give a minimum of information, while others are full of information.  From The Point Richmond History Association website you are able to read their past bulletins which are full of local history of the area and the site also includes an extensive  online collection of historical photos of  the area.   Even if you are not a family researcher for the area, if you like California History you will find it a great site to browse.

In browsing The Big Bear Lake History site there is a photo of  a stamp mill.  The  caption reads
"This is  a  Joshua-Hendy 5-stamp ore mill and was purchased for the Historical Society in 1994 from David Trabucco of  Bear Valley in Mariposa, California. It has been reconstructed at its present site."

Wonder where this mill was located before it was moved.  Anyone know?

The Ventura County Genealogical Society Archives site is one of the more extensive county record transcription sites: A great example of volunteer efforts:

How about this fun spot- the Gossip Column  of the Temecula Valley Historical Society

I know that there are more of these wonderful California Historical/Genealogy Society  websites online.  I just haven't found them all  yet!  Let me know of others you would like to see added to this  website as I will be continually updating .
