Searching for family information on the net, also involves posting your
information ! When you get the word out to others about your quest you
may be surprised at who else is looking for the same folks. The
benefit of finding others researching the same family is that they
often have photos, and other memorabilia they are willing to share, and
you have also just found more family~!

The largest resource for posting queries on the internet is the
rootsweb.com mailing lists, or the ancestry.com message boards. Both
are FREE to use.

From this site http://lists.rootsweb.com/, you can find lists that
pertain to specific locations (i.e. a county or state) and also lists
specifically relating to an individual surname. You can also search
all the previous posts to these lists from the website. This is a
treasure trove of information. The archives hold all the information
ever posted to these lists for the past ten years or so. There are more
than 30,000 discussion lists at rootsweb.

Message boards also cover specific geographic locations and surnames.
The difference between the lists and boards is that when you join a list
you will automatically receive each message that is posted to that
list. Message board posts will only come to you if they are in response
to your query.

Another advantage of posting the information on these lists or boards,
is that they will remain there for you to retrieve if you should loose
the information due to a computer crash! Or perhaps you just can't find
something-----because you don't know what stack or box you "filed" that
piece of information in!

I have taken up the hunt for friends several times. I just put up a
quick note on a particular surname board, and in less that a week I have
been able to find someone else researching that same family- I put the
two folks in touch and off they go sharing their family history.

There are specific lists at rootsweb for Genealogy "newbies"- You may
want to join this list and learn more about researching on the internet.
