The President, Congress And Iraq
By Guest Editorial Writer James Heth

The USA has never faced a problem as great as the one facing congress today. Congress is perched precariously on the very cliff edge of a constitutional crisis never before equaled in our history. If the president should veto the bill funding the military but demanding that all combat troops be home by September 2008 then congress will face a dilemma upon which there is no clear answer and the very foundation of the government will be at stake for if congress does not override the veto it is simply surrendering its role in government and we will be left with a situation where there is no check on the executive branch, in other words a complete dictatorship, for the only function left for congress will to be a rubber stamp. Our democracy will be at an end. On the other hand if congress should override the veto the military overseas will collapse due to a lack of funding and all will be lost. The possibility of finding a compromise bill is truly unlikely because Bush has repeatedly stated that he will veto any bill that calls for a timetable to bring home the troops and congress is determined to do just that and so the government is facing what may well be its biggest crisis in its history. We can only hope that the president will at long last come to realize that his adventure in Iraq is a failed folly and congress is only reflecting the will of the American people which is what they are supposed to do. However, so far, he has been unwilling or unable to recognize any one of the major mistakes his administration has committed and it seems unlikely that he has the courage or the ability to change. We can only sit back hold our breath, watch and pray. James Heth
