Arrogance

This latest example of arrogance by a president who actually believes that he is far above the law is simply further evidence our enemy’s overseas use to claim that the USA is a lawless, reckless bully, threatening world peace and in fact the real terrorist on the planet. In commuting Scooter Libby’s sentence Bush is thumbing his nose at the judge, the jury, the courts, and the American people. If the congress and the American people do not stand up and say “No! No! No! This time you have gone way to far.” we will never regain the respect as a nation we once enjoyed. Vice President Cheney said recently, that since he was not a part of the legislative or the executive branch of the government their rules did not apply to him and therefore he refuses to obey the Federal Oversight Office to inform the National Archives of the materials he has classified. When that office attempted to have him conform he attempted to abolish that agency. This attitude of being above the law has permeated the White House and led us into the business of torture, spying on American citizens and an ugly variety of other abuses of our constitution not the least of which is overriding the right of habeas corpus. The sordid Libby affair is simply one of the most blatant examples of this administration’s utter contempt of the law. If we as a nation allow this kind of action to continue we will certainly deserve the criticism being heaped upon us by the rest of the world. Let’s hope that congress will finally do something to restore the rule of law before it is too late. James Heth James Heth Email: James Heth To Read More Columns By James Heth: James Heth Archives
