 A Titmouse?

Yes Virginia there is a creature called a “Titmouse”, however it is not a mouse at all nor does it have anything at all to do with a bosom. Actually it is a bird.

In fact there are two kinds indigenous to California; the Plain Titmouse and the Brindled Titmouse. Oh yes, there is another called a Tufted Titmouse, but that one can only be found in the southeast. They are no bigger than your thumb. They live in meadows and wooded areas and like to pal around with sparrows, wrens and chickadees.

They are very shy little birds and are completely harmless. They like to eat grass seeds and at times can be seen scurrying along the ground looking for seeds. They can be found almost anywhere in California but prefer wooded foothills and so are frequently seen around Mariposa.

The Bridled Titmouse has a tiny crest on its head and both bird’s bodies are whitish and they have blue grey feathers.  Their song is a kind of chirping sound.

They are simply just another one of the delightful creatures that live within the mountain shadows.
