Santa Cruz In Mariposa County - By Linda Gast
![]() On the way to Santa Cruz a lovely single lane road winds through the foothills. |
I was on my usual hunt to photograph birds and raptors when I discovered the old town of Santa Cruz established in 1849.
Indian Gulch one of the earliest settlements in Mariposa county was originally called Santa Cruz . When the town became large enough for a post office they discovered there was already a Santa Cruz. It was renamed Indian Gulch.
All that is left today is a wooden building that was used as the General Store and the Santa Cruz Cemetery with a Clampers Memorial. It is off Indian Gulch Road on Indian Gulch Ext. Road. It is all privately owned land now so if you visit please respect that.
On the other side of the road is a barn and a huge goat ranch. The small dirt road curves through the rolling grazing land. After a certain point past the “town” the road becomes almost impossible especially in the rainy season.

![]() This building is the only building left of what was once the thriving town of Indian Gulch. |
![]() The neglected cemetery with the Clampers Monuments still survives the tests of time.
Those Clampers do a very good thing with their Historic Monuments.

![]() If you visit in the early spring you may chance to see a baby kid. |
