SPAY AND NEUTER YOUR PETS and your weird friends and relatives!
This is a humorous way to get your attention about a serious problem. California lawmakers are
considering a bill that would require pet owners to spay and neuter their dogs and cats by the age of four months old.
Bill supporters say it will stop careless breeding practices that force more than 800,000 animals into California shelters every year. Pet owners that fail to follow the proposed law would receive a ticket warning them to fix their animal within 30 days or face a $500 fine. The bill exempts most breeders, but they still have to pay for special permits that could cost up to $150 per animal. I take the photos and do the web page for the SPCA of Mariposa County. When I first started 8 years ago I could remember the names of all the dogs and cats I took photos of. I am no longer able to remember the names of the ones I did last week. I have taken thousands of photos over the years and they have just become a blur. I have seen animals put down first hand at the Merced Animal Shelter. I have taken photos of their bodies being stored in barrels in a cooler waiting to be disposed of. I can not imagine what it would be like to have the job of doing this day after day. WE have to do something. I don’t know if this bill is the answer, but killing thousands of animals each year is unspeakable.
California Healthy Pets Act AB 1634
It is widely accepted that 9.6 million animals are euthanized annually in the United States.
The ones that come to the SPCA are the lucky ones. They are treated with kindness and respect. They get good homes. Many of the animals at the Mariposa SPCA are adopted by people outside our county. There have been people that have come from all over California after seeing a cute little face on our web page. We can’t keep hiding from the fact that we are killing thousands of animals each year. The Mariposa Animal Control Shelter is a good shelter. They do not have to deal with the 100’s of animals each week that the Animal Controls in the larger cities do. I encourage you to visit the Merced Animal Shelter and see all the dogs and cats that have to be killed each week. I think every person that cares about animals needs to see what really happens to these animals and to ask everyone they know to spay and neuter their pets.
