Mariposa Elementary School has a new program that was started in February of 07. The main
objective is to keep kids safe and
continue their education after regular school hours. The program has been funded by the
state for 3 years and is headed by Teacher/Coordinator Marty Livingston with the help of three assistants and a
Literacy Coach. The program is free of charge to all children and runs from 2:30pm - 6:00pm Monday through
Friday. At this time K.I.D.S Club has 72 members.
This isn't just a baby sitting program. It provides homework assistance, reinforcements
for Reading, Math and Writing skills and Fun educational games. A healthy snack is offered to all attending
each day. They have a newly remodeled classroom that has computers and Play Stations along with a kitchen for
cooking.
I visited on a Friday which was 'Clean up the campus and Cooking Day'. A new Martial
Arts class was started that day by parent, Rose Pate of Mariposa Martial Arts. Parents are encouraged to share
any skills they have with classes and workshops. There was still plenty of time to play outside after the kids,
wearing gloves, picked up all the trash, the bouncing balls and hauling all the discarded coats and jackets to
the Lost and Found. Friday was the last day of Drug Awareness Week. All the kids were asked to wear red and
that is why some of the students had red paint on their faces and arms.
A weekly newsletter is sent to parents each Friday to keep them informed. Monday is set
aside for Dance/Movement and Math focus, Tuesday is Yoga and Language arts, Wednesday is Computer Lab and
Science, Thursday is Theme Discussion Projects and Catch Up and Friday is Cooking and Clean-up.
Their wish list includes: Monetary donations - Cooking Supplies: flour, potatoes, cheese,
fruits, veggies, tortillas, juice - Educational Computer Games - Gift Cards (to be used as
needed) - Music CDs
HAVE A SPECIAL TALENT? Love to cook? Dance? Sing? Web Master? Share your skills with the Club! One hour, one afternoon, just a few moments, will open doors to new adventures for club members. Give us a shout at 742 – 4232. School web page http://www.mes.mariposa.k12.ca.us/default.htm
