Bright orange streaks of light started appearing at the hummingbird feeders a week ago and then the combat began. I knew that the warriors of the Hummingbird world had returned.

The Rufous Hummingbirds are one of the smallest in size, but they make up for it in ferocity.  They are known as Rufousbacked, Ruff-necked, Flamebearer and Cinnamon. They are down right aggressive and not only fight with other species of hummys, but they even wage war on females and males of their own kind.  I guess you could say they are bad tempered and really don't like to share.   They are very colorful and their orange, green and black colors make for a beautiful little bird.  Flaring their tales displays a fan that any Victorian lady would have liked to carry.
When compared with other hummys of the family the Rufous is very noisy.  When it exhibits it's intense animosity it utters a shrill
and very angry sound. They certainly do bring a new and exciting life to the hummingbird feeders in the middle of a hot summer.
