The Wildflowers of Mariposa County - By Linda Gast

Lupines along Silva Road.

Spring is the most beautiful time of year in Mariposa County.  March through May can bring out the most amazing display of wildflowers. I can remember a few years ago it rained off and on all through the spring months and the first wildflowers were still blooming when the last of the flowers came out in June.   We probably won't have that kind of show this year, but every year has it's own beauty.

A good place to see early flowers is down on Old Highway in the lower foothills.  The red buds along the Merced River Canyon are always beautiful as are the poppies in Hites Cove.  The red buds in the rocks along Ben Hur road
are a must to see.  A drive that we all make regularly down Highway 140 to Merced has some spectacular blooms in the rocks. The beautiful yellow and orange flowers are already blooming on the lower part of 140 closer to Merced.

I have taken 1000's of photos over the years, but every spring I am right back out there doing it again.  I just can't seem to get enough.  Photos of whole fields are captivating, but those close-ups bring out the most amazing things
