On May 15, 1907, the first
scheduled Yosemite Valley Railroad passenger train arrived in El Portal from Merced. That event also signaled the founding of
El Portal as a town on the railroad, making El Portal one hundred years old this month.
El Portal residents, railroad fans, Mariposa County residents and curious tourists turned out yesterday for the 100th
anniversary of El Portal.
Jack Burgess presented historic walking tours of the town along with many old time photos of what El Portal used to look like.
There were food booths, music, many raffle prizes, vendors, a dunking booth, pancake breakfast, Spring Run, the Community
Photo on the train.
A tour of the Bagby Station even 50 feet of track was set up for anyone wanting to try their hand at pumping an original YVRR
handcar.
The below photo is a collage of four photos merged together in Photoshop resulting in a file size of 66MB and measuring 5247 x
2199 pixels. Then reduced to 1200 x 503 pixels with a file size of about 120K.
