Mariposa County residents who live in District One have a new Supervisor by the name of
Brad Aborn.
The Sierra Sun Times visited with Mr. Aborn on his horse ranch in Midpines, California where he and his wife, Irene
are raising three children (Cindy, Bill And Cathy) and over thirty Arabian horses that they breed and sell worldwide.
Brad Aborn was born in Chicago, Illinois and attended four different high schools before graduating from Huntington Park High
School near Los Angeles as his parents made their way out to California.
After graduation he went on to Compton College majoring in Pre-Engineering, but after finding out that at that time there was
not a lot of demand for Engineers he went and enrolled in the Navy and eventually became a Jet Fighter Pilot during the
Vietnam era and put in 5 1/2 years in the Navy and then 19 years in the Reserves. After the Navy, Brad went on to work with
helicopters and Lear Jets for private companies in the L.A. basin. He has sold real estate and worked in the banking
industry both residential and commercial development until retiring and moving to Mariposa County.
When asked how he came to live in Mariposa County, Brad said horses have been a part of my life for many years
and that in fact is how he met his wife, Irene, as she also has a love of horses. They were married at the Chapel in Yosemite
and for years would come up here and ride horses in Yosemite National Park when they could find the time. He has been visiting
the area since around 1953, so he knew Mariposa County fairly well. Irene, Brad and the children officially moved up to
Mariposa County in 2004
Mr. Aborn decided to become a candidate for Supervisor after moving up here and wanting to become involved in the
community he thought his knowledge in jobs he had in his life would help him be a successful supervisor for the county, plus
the Supervisor job for District One just happened to be up for re-election. After discussing the matter with Irene and
having her consent he filed the paper work and planned a campaign.
When asked what he hopes to accomplish, Mr. Aborn replied he would like to pursue bringing in low impact business to
the area, especially now that the U. C. is in Merced. He would like to see good paying jobs so our youth could stay in the
area and we are not so heavily dependent on the Bed Tax from Yosemite. He also would like to keep the rural flavor that
so many of us have come to enjoy in Mariposa County. Issues with water in the county and development out near the Mariposa
County Airport needs to be watched closely. Also the San Joaquin Rail District needs to be integrated fully in the county.
As Mr. Aborn was asked one final question about Mariposa County he found it was a hard question to answer as there are so many
reasons.
The Sierra Sun Times asked "What is the favorite thing you enjoy about Mariposa County", he quickly replied "The
quietness" but then proceeded to list the lack of traffic, small community and knowing and enjoying your neighbors.
As I thanked Mr. Aborn for giving me time for this interview, he is about to sit on his first Board of Supervisors meeting
this week, I shook his hand and wished him the best of luck and said goodbye. Driving away as the sun was setting, Brad was
seen walking to the horse stalls as it was feeding time for the hungry Arabian Horses.
