Coulterville’s "Hidden Treasure" -  By Linda Gast

History Lives On At The Museum

This week my husband and I decided to take a ride to Coulterville. It has been several years since we have been there and I was on my usual mission of photographing birds and raptors along the way.

We were surprised to see how much the town has "changed". There are many stores and restaurants open and the town looks like it has been totally refreshed. The Jeffery's Hotel gives you the feeling you could ride a horse up and get a room.

The Northern Mariposa County History Center is a real "Hidden Treasure". It has recently reopened with many new exhibits. There is a display of miniature vehicles from the 1800’s made by William Kirk. The Converse family, one of the pioneer families, is featured with an interesting group of old relics from their family. The display cabinets from the original drug store in the backroom are truly beautiful.  My husband was fascinated with the old guns and rifles.

I guess the thing that impressed me the most was how well the museum is taken care of. It’s only support comes from the community with fund raisers and donations. The next fund raiser will be the Coyote Howl in May. This year all the proceeds will go to support the History Center. If you have never attended one of the "Howls" don’t miss it. It would be a great time to enjoy this historic little town and visit the History Center.
