| "Beginning Sunday, April 1st, firewood cutting and gathering will be permitted on the Sierra National Forest,"
announced Forest Supervisor Ed Cole. The cutting and gathering of firewood is open to all individuals who obtain a woodcutting
permit from the Sierra National Forest. Only dead and down trees can be cut; no green or standing dead trees can be taken
under these permits. Permits are valid for personal use only and are good from April 1st through November 30, 2007. Woodcutting permits will be available to purchase beginning Monday, March 26th at Forest Service Offices in Clovis, Prather and North Fork. On Sunday, April 1st permits will be available only at the Forest Service Office in Prather. Permit fees for 2007 will be $10.00 per cord, with a two-cord minimum and a ten cord maximum purchase per year. A cord is the amount of split wood in a stack four feet wide by four feet high by eight feet in length. "At this time of the year it is not uncommon to have roads impassable due to snow or wet conditions. Make sure to check on road conditions before heading out to cut wood," added Cole. "Also, while permits are available for purchase beginning March 27th, woodcutting is not permitted until Sunday, April 1st," said Cole. Woodcutters need to be familiar with the terms and conditions of their permit before cutting any wood. Violations of permit terms can result in the permit being revoked and a fine of up to $5,000 and/or 6 months in jail. Cutting firewood without a permit may also result in a maximum $5,000 fine and/or jail sentence.
