The Demise of Stupidville

Way far off above the Great Plains and above the Grand Divide there lies a land nestled between some
towering mountains called, Oz lies within the county of Stupidville. Oz is an enchanted land with mystical qualities. It has magnificent waterfalls, soaring granite cliffs, a lovely flowing river with a sparkling pond with wild geese and ducks. Lovely golden and green meadows sprinkled with colorful wild flowers and groups of purple scented lupine clustered along its hillsides. Millions of people from all over the world come each year to experience this natural wonderland and most stay in and around Stupidville which is a mountain rural community next to Oz. The county of Stupidville receives over ten million dollars a year in bed tax and its restaurants and other businesses enjoy the cash flow generated by these visitors. All was well. Then one day a developer from far in the south appeared with the dream of building an elite development in a far off corner of Stupidville County. There was a road near the area he planned to build the development on and he needed an easement from Oz in order to use the road. The Land of Oz refused. Then by some strange twist of logic understood by but a few, he decided that the road was really in Stupidville County. And so with great charm and the promise of the county receiving large property taxes in the years to come and the creation of hundreds of jobs, the developer persuaded the officials of Stupidville County to join with him in a lawsuit against the land of Oz claiming the road in the other county was really in Stupidville County which, of course, it wasn’t. When the Wizard of Oz learned that Stupidville had teamed up with the developer to sue Oz he was angered and decided to retaliate against Stupidville by closing the entrance to Oz that was on the Stupidville side of Oz. At once the tourist business in Stupidville died. Years later a third generation rancher in Stupidville County and a veteran county official was standing next to the old county building staring at all the tumbleweeds piled against the side of the building when one of the supervisors who had most strongly urged the county to join the developer in the suit came walking by. The veteran official touched the mans arm and pointed down the deserted main street and at all the boarded up businesses.” You know”, he said, “Suing Oz was about the stupidest thing that ever happened in Stupidville”.
