Mountain Shadows

Spider Web I was at my computer the other day looking out of the window behind it when something glinted silver and caught my eye. Upon closer examination I saw it was a long spider web with a spider about the size of a pea swinging like a pendulum at the end. I watched as it gently settled down on the outside windowsill. After a moment it climbed back up the silvered web to the top of the window frame. From there it dropped letting out another silver strand all the way to the bottom. It then repeated this process until it had a number of strands running from the top of the window frame down to the outside sill each about two inches from the other. Then it crept from one to the other attaching to each, continuing until it had a large delicate web glistening in the sunlight with almost a rainbow like reflection of colors; a perfectly constructed masterpiece of engineering in but a matter of minutes. I was enthralled and amazed at the flawless design of the web. What made it even more interesting was the realization that any strand of that web was stronger than a thread of steel the same size. One cannot help but wonder how the first spider to weave such a web knew what to do? And so it is just another day living within the mountain shadows.
