Las Mariposas Civil War Days

The Frank Long Ranch was host to a Civil War Reenactment on April 25-27 2008. The gentle rolling slopes and large grass meadows made it an excellent location for the event.
We went to the Sunday morning skirmish and the day couldn't have been better.  In the Civil War novels I have read they talk about people bringing their chairs and picnics to watch a battle.  It felt like we were part of the setting sitting in the shade under a big oak among  boulders.

All the members participating in the reenactment wore authentic civil war costumes.  I saw one lady sitting on a rock and I thought she had a plastic water bottle, but when I got home and looked at my photos it was an old whisky bottle.  She was holding  to the authenticity of the period dress by using it as a water bottle.

The person portraying Abe Lincoln looked so much like the real President Lincoln that you would have sworn it was him.  The boom of the cannons made you jump as they echoed across the hills.  Young girls in full costume down to pantaloons walked among the crowd selling handmade campaign ribbons to support the troops.

Before and after the skirmish the Union and Confederate camps were open so that you could take photos and talk to the participants.
