Preparing the Lunch

Craft Fair

The John C. Fremont Hospital Volunteers Spring Fling was held this year at the Senior Center on Spriggs Lane on Saturday, May 31st.
I asked to cover this luncheon, for the Goldrushcam.com, because I have used the services of the hospital on several occasions and I was glad to support this fund raising event.  It is always hard to get meaningful photos at an event such as this, but when I saw all those lovely ladies in their blue smocks I new it was going to be easy.  Their enthusiasm showed on their faces as they greeted each and every person that came through the door.  The Senior Center Dining room was decorated in a festive red white and blue. Some of the "ladies" grandchildren served the lunch that had been prepared by the volunteers.  The Oriental Chicken Salad was a standout and I really must get the recipe for the cake topped with pineapple and nuts.

This organization was started in 1958 by a group of women led by Betty Huffman.  The adoption of their familiar blue smocks has earned them the affectionate nickname "Blue Ladies".  They have donated their time and energy to bringing comfort to the patients of John C. Fremont Hospital for 50 years.  In recent years they have turned to fund raising for much need equipment.  President, Vivian Hartman, accepted a framed certificate expressing the thanks, from the Hospitals Board of Directors, for 50 years of dedicated service.

The 32 member strong group meets once a month at the Senior Center to work on crafts to sell for purchase of equipment at the hospital.  One "Blue Lady" stated proudly, "We earn and donate as much as $10,00 to $15,000 a year."  She also stated sadly that their numbers are decreasing and because of legal restrictions they are no longer allowed to work with patientsThe saying they wear on their smocks states "Don't Yell At Me I'm A Volunteer"
The entertainment for the day was provided by Tom Brownell, who sang many great songs and even asked the group to join in on some.

I would like to add my thanks to these dedicated ladies for a job well done.
