Miniatures in Mariposa
- By Rochelle Frank With Photographs By Linda Gast

Tiny masterpieces
prompt visitors to pick up magnifying glasses provided by the gallery for closer examination of the incredible work on
display. Some are painted in oils, watercolor or acrylic. Others are rendered in pencil, charcoal, pastel, ink or mixed
media. There are even a few miniature sculpture pieces.
In order to be
considered a miniature, the artwork (including frame and matting) cannot exceed 48 square inches, with a maximum image
size of only 25 square inches. A majority of the approximately 300 separate pieces are considerably smaller. Compare
the size of a penny shown with the examples here to get an idea of actual sizes.
The Northern
California Society of Art in Miniature began sponsoring its show in 2000 and held two shows per year for the first two
years. This is the tenth show and the eighth year of the event. Throughout that time artists have competed in several
different categories for each show including landscape, portrait, animals and still life.
Visitors to the
gallery constantly express amazement at the artistic and technical skill that can be demonstrated in such a small space.
Almost all of the artwork is for sale and is price marked.
Many artists
including several from Mariposa and the surrounding area enter their work year after year according to show organizer,
Elizabeth Specht, but artists from many states in every area of the country, as well as several international
exhibitors, contribute in a wide variety of styles, mediums and subjects.
Sierra Artists
Gallery is located at Sixth Street and Hwy 140 in the historic district of Mariposa. It is open Tuesday through Saturday
from 10 am to 4 pm. The exhibit will be on display through March 30. Visitors are encouraged to come in and vote for
their favorite miniature work of art to determine the "People's Choice" award.
