Butterfly Festival Skateboard Contest Results

More than 90 persons gathered at the Mariposa' Skate Park Saturday, May 3, 2008 to cheer contestants in the Butterfly Festival Skateboarding Contest. Skaters from the ages of 6 to 23 competed for $300 in prizes and bragging rights. All prizes were donated by local Mariposa merchants.

Three judging teams (all local skaters) scored runs for technical difficulty and style. Style points were added for “smooth runs” with good “flow”; points were detracted for “dead time” during a run or too much repetition. Some of the best stunts came right at the 60-second call of “TIME!”

Sunday, May 4, 2008, skaters showed off their “best trick.” This demonstration was a first-time event for the Mariposa skaters. Although the crowd was a bit smaller, around 80 persons, excitement and enthusiasm ran high for this new event.

Many visitors were surprised to find a skatepark of this quality in Mariposa. A major skateboard website (www.caliskatz.com) awards Mariposa's park “9 skatewheels” on a scale of 10. Only 3 skate parks out 125 parks ranked in California score higher – one is the Wave Skatepark in Santa Cruz; the other two are in southern California.

The skateboard contest and demonstration were sponsored by Coldwell Banker and Kristi's Skate Shop.
