Andrew Jackson was a dynamic man of great charm and was extremely charismatic. It is said that he could have sold ice to Eskimos and talk birds out of trees.
That he completely routed the British army in the battle of New Orleans was just one of his many accomplishments. Although the British had over twelve thousand troops and Jackson only eight, his military genius combined with his ability to inspire prevailed. He had been able to convince the pirate Jean Lafitte to bring several thousand of his seasoned warriors to join the struggle against the British and together they soundly defeated the English and in doing so brought an abrupt end to the war of 1812.
Jackson’s popularity was such that he easily won the popular vote in 1824 although the electoral college elected Adams. However in 1828 running as the people’s candidate he defeated Adams and again in 1832 he soundly defeated Clay.
In his military career he, because of his toughness and courage had the nickname, ”Old Hickory”.
