El Dia de los Muertos in Hornitos, California

The annual Day of the Dead procession from the town square up to the cemetery at Saint Catherine's Church on the hill was held on Monday November 2, 2009. Around 300-350 participants were on hand for the event. The main ceremony for the evening was the candle lighting, followed by the walk up to the cemetery led by Rev. Stephen Bulfer of Saint Joseph Church in Mariposa, California. There were prayers and special remembrances for Dona Candelaria De Sapien, restorer of this Hornitos tradition. There was also a special remembrance for Father Gene Csencsits who died in an auto accident on Hornitos Road after leading this same service many years ago back on November 2, 1984.

The evening began with Johnathan Bock, from Stellar Gallery in Oakhurst, California, hosting an art exhibit celebrating the Dia de los Muertos. The exhibit featured many area artists who had their works available for viewing in the old Pacific Saloon. After the procession up to the cemetery folks had a few different options for the evening. They could either stay at the church for a mass or head down to Stag Hall where the Patrons Club had refreshments. The evenings menu included chili, hot dogs, many assorted desserts along with hot cocoa and coffee served up for the appreciative crowd.
