Bob Kirchner welcomes everyone to the opening night bonfire

The Kick Off |
November 7, 2009
Mariposa, California
On a gorgeous Fall day in Mariposa the Trans Valley Youth Football
League Super Bowl was played at the Mariposa Fairgrounds. Twelve
teams played off during the day beginning at eight in the morning
and playing past sundown under the lights.
The weekend had a early start on Friday night with a bonfire. In the
middle of Mariposa, while a bonfire was burning, the players and
their families gathered together with local residents to enjoy an
evening. The warmth from the fire along with music, S'Mores and hot
chocolate was enjoyed by all.
Mariposa merchants had their yearly Open House during the weekend,
as the shop keepers opened their doors with specials and the hotels
were fully booked for the weekend. Buses transferred folks from the
fairground to different locations in town including the Old Jail and
the Courthouse, which were both open for tours. The bus also stopped
at the Mariposa Museum and History Center where folks enjoyed a tour
of the museum. After touring the inside of the museum the guests had
a special treat, along with watching the Stamp Mill operate, they
could try their hand at gold panning.
Out at the fairgrounds the games were being played to a generally
packed grandstand, as every three hours two new teams would take the
field to play each other for the championship. Also at the
fairgrounds, non-profits and other booths were set up with either
information or items to purchase. The California Highway Patrol had
a track set up with a go-cart that could simulate an alcohol
impaired driver, through the use of computers, everyone seemed to be
having fun with this challenge. The State Mining and Mineral Museum
was also open for the Super Bowl. A Blacksmith was demonstrating his
craft by making horseshoes. A Destruction Derby car was also
available for the kids on the losing teams to take their frustration
out on. A huge mallet was provided to them along with safety glasses
as they beat up on the car. The crowds had many different foods and
drinks to sample as they watched the games from the shaded
grandstands.
As the sun was setting the games were still being played and shouts
of joy could be heard coming from the Mariposa Fairgrounds. Mariposa
would like to say "Thank You" to all the teams and their families
for visiting our town and playing some great football. We'd like to
say "Good Job" to everyone involved in make this event possible,
with a special "Thanks" going out to Bob Kirchner for being the
driving force behind this great event!
