Merced Wildlife Refuge By Linda Gast

An Osprey in Merced County

One of the best places to see wintering birds is at the Merced Wildlife Refuge.

The Refuge covers over 2,000 acres of wetlands. The largest population of Lesser Sandhill Cranes, in the valley, call it their winter home. Thousands of Snow Geese can be seen floating in the water from the road around the Refuge.

Another good place to see the winter visitors is along the canals in Merced County.
