Celebration and Announcement of the
Yosemite Gateways/Byways Geotourism WebMap
April 8, 2010 from 2:30pm - 4:30pm
Cliff Room, Yosemite Lodge, Yosemite
National Park
Over 300 nominations have been published
highlighting Sierra assets that are authentic
and distinctive to the region. Explore the
WebMap
for trip planning and to view what unique assets
are highlighted in and around your area. New
features on the updated website include:
featured content, social networking links,
exploration tracks,
the ability to give a
Thumbs Up
for your favorite nominations, and create a
My Favorites
list.
Selected Nominations
The local Geocouncil reviewed and evaluated all
of the nominations before submitting them to
National Geographic for inclusion in the final
WebMap. Only nominations that were complete
(quality pictures, accurately located on map,
complete description, contact information) and
met the geotourism definition were considered
for inclusion. If your nomination was incomplete
or you see something missing, you can still
complete your nomination and submit it.
Next Steps
The Sierra Nevada Geotourism project will
continue to work through three additional phase
areas; the Tahoe Emigrant Corridor, Northern
Sierra and Southern Sierra phases. We are
working on building partnerships for the Tahoe
Emigrant Corridor now. The focused nomination
period for the Tahoe Emigrant Corridor is
scheduled for June - August, 2010.
Additional events announcing the Yosemite
Gateways/Byways Geotourism WebMap will be held
at the Banff
Mountain Film Festival on April 2nd and
3rd at the Tri County Fairgrounds in Bishop, at
Earth Day in
Mammoth Lakes on April 17th at the
Village at Mammoth, and at the
Tahoe Truckee
Earth Day on April 24th at the Village at
Squaw Valley.
