Ferguson Rock Slide As Of December 2006

The Ferguson Rock Slide in the Merced River Canyon has buried Highway 140 and now the rocks tumble into the Merced River.
This photo taken during the month of December 2006 shows the angle of repose that the rock slide has taken. Up above
out of sight of this photo are a few ledges that threaten to collapse the slide again as gravity takes over and the slide ends
up in the river causing a blockage. Water and gravity besides an earthquake can make a hillside become unstable. Water can
saturate the ground causing a slippage and then gravity takes over until the angle of repose prevents any further rocks
from tumbling down.

Ferguson Rockslide Timeline

The Link below is to a Virtual Reality movie of the Ferguson Rock Slide.
It started as a 100 Meg Photoshop file and has been reduced to about 7 Megs.
This is still a big file, not too bad for DSL and cable modems but will take a
while on Dial-up. The Solution: Open the page, go read some other news on the
Goldrushcam / Sierra Sun Times and then go back and it should be ready to go.
Read below the movie on how to work the controls, remember move your mouse
slowly for a better effect. Also this movie will be stored in your cache, as long
as you do not dump the cache, the next time you go to view the movie the loading
will be as fast as your computer can load it off of your hard drive :)
One more thing, you must have Apple Quick Time on your computer for the movie.
Do not have it ? Get it HERE. It is free !
Tell your friends you saw it on the Goldrushcam.com
