Our Viewpoint
| 9-04-2004 11:15 AM The ' Crocodile Hunter ' Steve Irwin, 44 years old, was killed doing what he loved to do, filming wild animals in their environment. He and his crew were filming off of the Great Barrier Reef when he came down from above a Stingray. The Stingray stuck the barb from his tail up into Steve's heart. We feel sorry for what happened to Steve and now his family has to carry on without him. But when you do the kind of things that he and others do for our entertainment the chance of something happening bad rises every time they venture out to film something or other. The same with Timothy Treadwell, he thought he had the upper hand with the bears in Alaska but finally one came along that was not as friendly as thought and Timothy and his girlfriend are longer alive. The same thing in Las Vegas with Siegfried and Roy, the tiger trainers, although he has survived his tiger mauling. Up here in Mariposa some people need to realize that the deer are not tame and could kick you or gore you faster than you could move. Last year we had a doe that would walk right up to you if you would let her. Someone apparently was hand feeding her ! My photos that I post of the deer are almost all taken with a telephoto lens unless I am in the house taking a photo through the window. Always have respect for these deer and other wild life. Even in Yosemite, we probably have all seen the photographers gather in a field where the bucks are feeding and get closer and closer to them as they try to get that perfect photo. Last year the tourists were touching the baby cubs !! We have to remember and teach our young impressionable children that wild animals are just that wild animals! |
