Drive just a few miles North on Highway 49 out of Coulterville and just before reaching
the junction of Highway 120 / 49 you will come upon the State Of California, Department of Fish And Game Trout Hatchery in
Moccasin, California. The photo to the left shows some of the many outdoor ponds that the bigger fish are raised in until they are taken away in trucks to be deposited in the lakes and rivers in the area. The overhead lines are to reduce the birds from taking all the fish! |

The trout swim all day around in the ponds as they are fed a high protein diet to help
them grow and be healthy. There is a little machine that accepts money that will give you some fish food so that the children can then feed the fish. When reaching around 1-1.5 lbs the fish are then taken to the lakes and streams for the fishermen to then try and catch them. |

If you get a chance and the building in the back of the hatchery is open, go inside and
here you will see many aluminum troughs where the fingerlings are raised. The white discs in the photo are what holds the fish food and are hooked up on automatic timers to feed the little fish!
