Mr.Leroy Radanovich gave another of his captivating oral performances yesterday at the Mariposa Museum and History Center.
He started out with slide projection photos of the early history days of Yosemite National Park when Carl Watkins lugged his photographic equipment into the park and Hutchings operated his hotel in the valley along with John Muir who was cutting wood for the hotels that were sprouting up.
Mr.Radanovich then showed slide photos of the Wawona area way back when Galen Clark first set up camp over there and when the Mann brothers opened the Wawona Hotel. He took us through time as new additions were attached to the hotel through a progression of owners.
Then we were outside the south entrance of the park looking at photos of the railroad and wood cutting operations that were taking place cutting down sugar pine trees and floating the trees in flumes down to Madera about 60 miles away. He had photos of 'highlining' where the wood cutters through a process of installing pulleys between canyons would then swing huge logs across the canyons in a perilous looking situation !
The early photos of the Fish Camp area were a treasure to see as a lot of logging took place over in that area.
The people attending and Mr.Radanovich knew many people in the later photos as many memories were brought up and reminisced !
Thank you Mr.Radanovich for giving these very informative lectures.
Plus, Leroy will have a new book out in a few weeks on more history in the area. Look for it here as it becomes available !!!

Just maybe the slide on the 140 will be cleared enough for one way traffic starting on Tuesday !!
The slide was a massive one starting at the top of a ridge about 30 feet deep and taking tons of rocks and dirt to the bottom. Caltrans has been busy trying to figure out the stablity of the mountain side !
Stay tuned as the Goldrushcam will let you know as soon as it is open !
