One clarification from the top photo for the beginners that will climb this granite.

Do not do something you think you cannot do, because if you fall you could roll all the way down onto the highway and that would not be a pretty sight !
That is why the experienced ones use the ropes.

Do you notice in the above photo how blue the sky is ?
I just marvel at the Blue sky in the Sierra Range.
The above photo had a polarizer on it to filter out the unpolarized light.
What does a polarizer do ?
Read this and tell me what it really is !

An email this morning about our post yesterday in the sheriff report where we mentioned Woodland Grade.
The person said they had never heard the grade called by that name before. We agreed but never knew it had a name.
The person said it was always known as Frye Hill,
probably for an old time family in the area, but the locals called it that because the grade could "fry" your motor !
We like that, and now when we travel on that section of 49 South will always think of that saying.

As August, 2006 fades away, we have a question.
Did it seem like a long month ?
Look at our page of photos for the month:

http://www.goldrushcam.com/goldrushcam_photo_gallery,2006,august.htm

Seems like a lot of photos to us. I actually counted them to make sure there was not a mistake made !

Do not think we will see 90 up here today, if that holds true we will have had only seven 90+ degree days this month along with an average temp of 75.3 degrees.
That compares with last year when we had nineteen days of 90+ weather and the average temp was 80.1

Craig V. posted on yesterday's photo of the day that he would like to join us if we make the trip up Mt.Dana.
He has already been up there a few times, so maybe he can be our leader.

I have been thinking about it and know I must travel light to make it up there, so I am considering only taking a wide angle lens up there as this would save some weight out of the back pack for more water ! But I just like having my lenses with me.
He recommends going the day before to get used to the altitude. maybe we can stay at the first campground on the way to Saddlebag Lake at is first come first served.

Ken Yager has a website up for Yosemite climbers!

http://yosemiteclimbing.org/index.html
Check it out !

Remember the Yosemite Facelift day starts on September 27.

For an article on Ken:

Maybe someday I will attempt to learn to use all those ropes and other things that the climbers use, but for now I am happy to make it to places in Yosemite that I have never been to before.

Regarding the effect of a polarizing filter on a camera (or polarized sun glasses):

The link you gave to the glenbrook site seems fine at a quick glance, but I think the important question is why the viewing and sun angles matter at all. That is nicely explained at the following site:

http://polarization.com/sky/sky.html

At first thought it is surprising that there is polarization because the molecules in the sky, which act as tiny dipole antennas (think of flattened "rabbit ear" antennas), are randomly spinning around. Also, the light from the sun hitting the atmosphere is not polarized.

What I enjoy about my polarized sun glasses is that a polarized filter gives us additional contrast and information about what we are seeing. Some things do not polarize light when reflecting and others do. That information is normally lost because our eyes are not sensitive to polarization. It's a bit like the enhancement color photography provides over B&W photography (apologies to Ansel Adams).

It would be interesting to have eyes and associated gray matter that could process polarization. Of course, while we are upgrading, we might as well add infra-red and ultra-violet capability as well.

Thanks Craig for that informative link.
Science and why we need to understand it.
Should have paid more attention in school !

Also sometimes you want to use the lens in Photography and others times no.
Also you lose a stop or two because of the lens.
