From 'Tal'

BIG MOON
Tonight's Moon is at perigee.....
from Greek, meaning "close to Earth."

The perigee Moon is about 12% larger
than the apogee, meaning "far from Earth."
The Moon will also be at perigee at 11:00 p.m., at a distance of 221,938 miles from Earth. As such, this will be the biggest and brightest Full Moon of 2006.

Tonight's wide Moon is going to glide through Earth's shadow, producing a 90-minute partial lunar eclipse visible from eastern Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia. Only 19% of the Moon will be in deep shadow, but that's enough for a pretty display. Maximum eclipse takes place at 1851 UT on Sept. 7th

About the same time (not so coincidentally, as the moon drives tides) the Irish (among others) are bracing for record tides, too.

Be watching seismographs. Why? Land "tides" are just as real as water tides, and thus with the moon giving it's best shot, it might be prime time for quakes.

Northernmost Moon!

Northernmost (and southernmost) Moons come in cycles of some 18.5 to 19 years. This year, the northernmost Moon happens on September 15, at 1:27 a.m. Universal Time (Sept. 14, 9:27 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time). The last northernmost Moon fell on Sept. 15, 1987, and the next one will be on March 7, 2025. On September 15 you'll see a Moon that rises and sets considerably farther north, and climbs much higher in the sky

Great info, Tal
