This is a Shay Locomotive in El Portal, California.
How do you know it is a Shay?
Look at the area around the wheels, see the long horizontal shafts?
Each shaft drives a wheel!
So although they were not fast, they could pull a heavy load up a grade
because of all the wheels being driven!
The water towers in back used to be at Bagby!
