 Old time metal food containers at the Coarsegold Historical Society Museum in Coarsegold, California

' Better Days ! '
Before plastic and chip clips was invented, items were stored in
metal containers! Bug and mouse proof and freshness were the order
of the day, with about the only trouble being getting the lid off sometimes.
The empty containers also made great storage devices for marbles, buttons,
fish hooks, money and other items.
The history center in Mariposa has a can of cinnamon that is somewhere
over a 100 years old and still has a very strong odor of cinnamon!

With that era behind us, the Mariposa County Composter is operating at less than peak efficiency as the amount of plastic in the system slows down the composting. 30-40% or more of the compost is plastics, maybe we should return to the days of old when we had these tins. Plus pennies in a tin container sound much better than in one of today's plastic bags :-)

I wonder why we do not go back to this form of storage. I guess it would put some industry out of business? We will watch for better packaging. I love this photo! }
