Almost Marble?
Given enough time Limestone will turn into Marble and this outcrop of rock on the South Fork of the Merced River looks like it is in between the stages of true marble and limestone.
Or maybe this is quartz stringers with shale? When you get into a transition zone with different types of rocks, strange transformations can take place due to heat and pressure deep in the earth. A transition zone is an area such as this where quartz is near shale with gold nearby! Join the Mariposa Rock and Gem Club and learn fun things about rocks and minerals of Mariposa County!
