Mariposa County History! <BR>This photo taken by Carleton Watkins in 1860 when he was commissioned by John Fremont to photograph his land grant shows the town of Mount Ophir with the mine in the background. <BR>This is where the purported $50 Gold Slugs were minted, but curiously no one has one of these slugs today. <BR>Where are they? Were they ever minted?  Also is the road in the photo the road that eventually became the old Highway 49?
