Apple Picking and Tasting in Yosemite
On Monday the annual apple picking in Yosemite National Park's two apple orchards had park workers and volunteers busy as the tree branches were shook by various means and the apples came tumbling down. Hard hats were worn by all to protect against the falling apples. Many apples were sampled during the day of apple picking that began in the morning hours and continued into the late afternoon hours.
The apples are removed to discourage the bears in Yosemite from climbing the trees, often using tourists vehicles as ladders at Curry Village. Many varieties of apples were planted over a hundred and thirty years ago as the homesteaders on the Valley floor used the apples as a staple due to their adaptability and long keeping.
The excess apples are transported to a hog farm near Hornitos where the hogs must be a pretty happy bunch after a meal of crunchy apples.
