Yesterday, in the early morning almost an inch of rain had fallen at 3300 ft, meaning more rain and snow to the high country in Yosemite National Park. Along with the warm weekend weather this combined for a snow melt that raised the Merced River in Yosemite above flood stage. The park service closed the park at about nine in the morning while evacuating some of the campers out of the flooded campgrounds.People mingled at the entrance to the park on the 140, some had reservations, but no way to get in to the park. Others in cars and tour buses mingled about and talked about that for some of them they might not ever get to return to the park again as this was a once in a lifetime trip. |

To keep current on the Merced River water flow: http://cdec.water.ca.gov/river/mercedStages.html The second chart on the left shows the water depth at Phono Bridge in Yosemite. I think anything over 10 feet is flood stage for the park. |

rob and i were in the park in the winter of 1950/51. we were working (him at the ahwahnee, me at the lodge) and the water got 3 or 4 or 5 feet deep in the store at the old village. the entire rim of the valley was one big waterfall. the ahwahnee was in danger of being flooded, and everyone filled sandbags. i have a lot of pictures - i ought to see if i can find them! but your river picture is great! it makes me want to go up 140 and look at it all! the son of a friend of mine works at yosemite institute and he keeps his dad up-to-date. |
