Springtime Water Flows From The Merced River Underneath The Bagby Bridge,Mariposa Photos,Mariposa 2005

Finally there is enough water flowing down the Merced River
at Bagby, that a boat can be put in there and float down into
Lake McClure for a day of fishing.

On the way to the Coulteville Coyote Howl on Saturday, we pulled over into Bagby off of Highway 49 between Mariposa and Coulerville. The water level is now high enough for boats to put in there and fish the river down into Lake McClure. As you can see by the water line on the shore, the water level is still a long way from full. The water is chocolate colored due to the higher water flow that is stirring up dirt along the banks of the river. Bagby was once the site of a full gold processing center. Acoss the river a train track was in place from Merced up into the canyon to El Portal. The old train can still be viewed in El Portal, although it is waiting for some energetic group to repaint it. All that is left in Bagby now are some footings of old buildings. Serpentine can be found here, a shiny waxy feeling mineral that has asbestos fibers running through it.
