Just a word of caution as these photos of old mines might make you want to go out and visit one. First off, most mines are on private property meaning that you must get permission before going on the land. You might with a little luck find some unmarked claims on BLM or Forest property. Second, you must watch where you walk,as vegetation over the years and general weakness of the earth above a mine could cause you to fall into a hole in the ground and die !!! Third, the things you find are not there for the taking, look, admire, take photos, but leave it there !! Fourth, join a gem club for field trips and a good time. To join the Mariposa Gem and Mineral Club, e-mail me for more information. The last mine we went to on a field trip was the Diltz Mine which is famous for producing a 52 pound mass of gold quartz.

Good morning, Grizzy. Yes this wheel is located at the Sweetwater Mine. There is a lot of heavy equipment laying around up there, but looters have taken anything that could be picked up fairly easy. Such a shame as so much history was up there. The walls of the house are covered in old newspaper that was used for insulation. Very interesting place, quiet now but must have been very loud in its day with all the stamps running and boilers and generators making their own noise. There is potential for a great story to be written about that mine ! |

Remember tonight there is music in the park again. The band for tonight is "Moonburn" playing classic rock and pop numbers from the 50's up through the present. The time is 7:00 PM, maybe bring a blanket for tonight. The cost is free but tips are very welcome. the location is next to the Pizza Factory on the 140 on the South end of town. Come on out and have a good time. Eat out early, look in the shops, buy something you like. then walk on over to the park. |
