Jeffrey Pine On Sentinel Dome In Yosemite National Park,Yosemite Photos,Yosemite 2005

The famous Jeffrey Pine photographed by Ansel Adams
and countless others on top of Sentinel Dome in
Yosemite National Park is now found lying on its side.
Alive until a drought in the 1970's killed it, a timeless
quiet beauty can still be found in the tree as
another day gives way to evening.

Late posting of the photo today as yesterday was a very long day.
Randy Bolt who works at the State Mining and Mineral Museum and also a member of the Mariposa Gem and Mineral Club led the members on a geolgy tour of the area.
Our first stop was near the Bear Creek Waterfall on the 140 where Randy pointed out many different rock types and why they are there.
We made our way up the Merced River Canyon toward Yosemite with stops on the way to point out formations of the canyon.
Finally inside Yosemite, we made trips here and there to learn about how the valley was formed.
After having lunch at Curry Village we journeyed up Highway 41 toward Fresno, turning off at the Glacier Point intersection to see the sunset atop of Sentinel Dome.
Thanks to Randy for knowing a shortcut to the dome we arrived with a few minutes to spare before sunset.
Although it was a very hazy sunset as there are currently a few fires in the park, it was a spectacular way to end a day of learning, joking, hiking and getting to know better, members of the club.
A big pat on the back to Randy for being one of the most knowledgeable, friendly people I have ever met.
This is a very condensed report of our day in Yosemite, as we now know what and why things are where they are in Yosemite.

what a wonderful day you must have had- i remember seeing that pine when i was a kid, and i remember the sadness when we heard that it had died.

where we live in midpines we can see the smoky haze and smell it.

goodbye to summer, soon, i suppose
