The Burma Grade on the other side of the Merced River at Briceburg takes you over the top of the ridge and eventually over to either the Greeley Hill area or to Buck Meadows or even to Yosemite. We did not have a map of the Stanislaus Forest, and after having a late start to our day, decided to head over to Greeley Hill and back through Coulterville. In the photo the brown spot next to Highway 140 just up from the Bear Creek Bridge looks like it has been excavated out for some reason or other. Maybe they used to dirt for road bed when making the highway backs in the 20's? We could sure use a rain or some wind as the air is getting very hazy and trying to look into the Central Valley from up here is impossible due to the haze. |

we took "burma road" to greeley hill once - and it is truly an interesting trip. (we came home by way of coulterville and hwy 49) i would recommend it in the spring, when the flowers and grass make it spectacular. people should take their lunch and a camera, obviously, and take their time. -- no other way to do it - you can't hurry! |
