Mistletoe may be romantic during the Christmas holidays but it is very destructive to trees as these next photos will show. This photo shows Mistletoe hanging in a Oak tree:
This photo shows a dying oak tree that has more Mistletoe in it than it can support. Mistletoe invades the tree from bird droppings that contain the seed from Mistletoe, that is very sticky and attaches itself to the tree:
Here is a healthy Oak tree without any Misteltoe in it:
The Mistletoe send out stringers inside the tree that suck the nutrients from the tree. This photo shows a stub of a branch that was cut off but not all the internal Mistletoe was cut off. So over time the Mistletoe has regrown.
If an area has Mistletoe, it must be cut from all the trees so the birds will not have any seeds to eat and then transplant the Mistletoe to other trees. Some species of pine trees in the Sierra - Nevada Range also can come down with a growth very similar to Mistletoe, that also will kill the tree eventually.
