A gorgeous day in Yosemite yesterday with just soft wispy white clouds overhead that in someplaces would gather together and make the sky look soft. Mirror Lake is up on the Eastern end of the valley by the horse stables. In the late 1800's they had boats on the lake and also in winter would use the frozen ice cut up into blocks for the eating establishments in Yosemite. Up until the 1970's the park would dredge the lake for the sand they would use on the roads in the winter. The lake according to some experts (Gotta love those experts !) is slowly filling in with silt and debris and one day will be a meadow like the valley is. Other experts think it will stay as a pool as the run off from Lake Tenaya will scour the sand further downstream. Either way it is a beautiful place and a nice and easy walk around the lake is inviting. I could not find out how long the walk is from the stables where you park your car to around the lake and back to your car but I will give my 'expert' opinion at about four miles maybe a little longer. |
