San Joaquin River Canyon

Looking across the San Joaquin River Canyon to where the
Powerhouse Fire of 1989 burnt the forest in a devastating
hot fire that destroyed the forest. Chaparral is now firmly
established along with some small trees as the forest
starts it's regrowth phase.

This photo was taken along the scenic byway outside of Oakhurst,CA. a few days ago.
When the forest can burn every so many years due to lightning it is better to let it burn than let years of buildup of the forest floor and thickening of the trees growing close together continue with fire suppression. So when a fire does start it burns very hot resulting in the leveling of anything growing that will then result in a lifetime or lifetimes to regrow back into a healthy forest. Where the fire that starts every so often is a 'cooler' fire that will not hurt the older trees but keep the forest floor clear of build up.
By the way did you know a Ponderosa Pine sheds all of it's needles every three years ?
