| Historical buildings along with interesting shops are on the South End of
Mariposa. Park in the public parking lot off of 5th Street and take some time to visit Odella's Antiques & Nostalgia, where Jim and Dell Knell always have the coffee on. After leaving Odella's, walk to the intersection of the Highway and go left up the stairs. The building you are in front of is known as the Fremont Adobe / Gold Coin. The Gold Coin, soon to be restored is the oldest building in the downtown historic distoric in Mariposa. Walk down a few buildings and stop in Dolls By Alinda, where always smiling Alinda Franklin will show you how she hand makes the soft sculpture dolls that she is famous for. Continue down the street until you reach the intersection of 6th Street and the Highway, cross the highway and head up the hill to the top of the next block. Turn right and walk South two blocks until you see the Old Mariposa Jail on the left hand side of the street. Read the plaque on the jail and take some photos, behind the jail is where the hangings used to take place! If you are real lucky the homeowner next door Leroy Radanovich, will see you and give a tour of the inside of the jail! Continue South until the next intersection and head back down the hill until you reach the highway again. Just to your right is Daily & Co Real Estate, take some time and talk to Jerry Feroben the owner of Daily & Co, about real estate in the area then take home some brochures to look at later. Continue on up the highway heading North until you reach the crosswalk and cross back over the Highway then head back South again until you reach the Mariposa County Arts Park. Take some time to have a picnic lunch and in the summer evenings there is live music on Friday and Saturday nights. Then take time to visit Chocolate Soup just South of the Arts Park, be prepared to spend some time at Elaine Seymour's very special store that is gorgeously arranged. Make sure to get on her Email list for special occasions that she puts on. Go back to the Arts Park and head to the back of the park where you will encounter the Mariposa Creek Parkway and stroll along the banks of the Mariposa Creek where occasionally still today a lucky person will find a Gold Nugget !! |
