A LOST ART NOW IN MARIPOSA
For A List Of The Featured Artists 2007 |
Sierra Art Trails is delighted to present a new artist in Mariposa. Marian Magill Banasik will be demonstrating the “lost Art” of Bobbin Lace during the “Trail” on October 13th and 14th. It is an elegant type of textile whose origins date back to Belgium in the 15th century. Bobbin Lace is always created by hand because it utilizes up to 200 weighted bobbins, which must be manipulated to create intricate designs. It takes several hours to complete one inch of such fine lace. Marian has always had a passion for the “Victorian Era” which inspired her to master creating these beautiful delicate works of art.
Marian has only lived in Mariposa for a year, but she spent many vacations in Mariposa while visiting with her family. She still maintains her membership in the North Carolina Regional Lacers where she spent many years and she also has membership in the Golden Gate Lacers and the Lace Museum of Sunnyvale, California.Trails will have many modalities of art this year including, oil painting, water colors, jewelry, sculptures, pottery, paper making, photography, digital photography, quilting, weaving, bobbin lace, blown glass, stained glass, metal sculpture, wood turning and carving, beadwork, gourd craft, and boat building. There will be 130 artists displaying their wonderful talent and many will be demonstrating their media during the show. Their art will also be for sale.
Art Trails will weave in and out of many of our local foothill communities, including 14 sites here in Mariposa. It is a feast of our great local artistic talent, and a wonderful way to become acquainted with some of the finest artists in California.
Tickets/catalogs for the event are on sale in several of our downtown businesses. They are $15, which admits two people.
